KL Bird Park (Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur)

One of the world’s largest covered bird parks and home to over 200 species of birds. The park spans 20.9 hectares and is split into 4 zones. Many of the birds, including colorful peacocks, are free to roam around within the zone, providing excitement from the moment you arrive. 

Zones 1 and 2 are free-flight, walk-in aviaries with peacocks, stalks, ibises and doves to name a few. Enclosed aviaries contain love birds, brahminy kites, owls, flamingos, and bulbuls. Zone 3 contains rare and beautiful hornbills which you can admire while enjoying a drink at the Hornbill Restaurant and café. While zone 4 is home to friendly parrots who love to be fed under staff supervision, as well as flightless birds, oriental birds, and the amphitheater where daily bird shows are held.

Insider Tips For KL Bird Park

  • Don’t be frightened of birds wandering freely within the park but don’t try to touch them either. They’ll only bite if threatened or disturbed. 
  • Visit the Feathered Friends Photo Booth in zone 4 to have your photograph holding parrots professionally taken taken. Payment only in cash (around RM5 (USD$1.06)).
  • Check the daily activities list for bird feeding times. Don’t miss daily shows at 12:30pm and 3:30pm.

Taxi

Rideshare drivers can drop passengers off at the bird park but are forbidden from picking passengers up. Return journeys must be booked through the taxi ticket counter near the exit at an inflated fare.

Tips: Be patient and try to photograph birds away from crowds as they tend to be more relaxed. If you’re lucky, an Indian blue peacock may fan his tail for you. Photos holding birds in the Feathered Friends Photo Booth must be purchased, but additional photos with your own camera are allowed.

Food & Drink

Several food and drink options are available within the bird park:  

  • Refreshment kiosks selling drinks and small snacks. The Flamingo Kiosk is located next to the Flamingo Pond in zone 1. The Parrot Kiosk is located next to the Feathered Friends Photo Booth in zone 4
  • The Sandwich Bar at the main entrance sells drinks and snacks, ice cream, young coconuts, and breakfast food. 
  • Hornbill Restaurant & Café is located near the Hornbill Park in zone 3. It’s the park’s only licenced restaurant and serves Malay and international food. The 3-tiered restaurant has plenty of seating, including an outdoor area overlooking the rainforest.

Backstory

The park grounds form part of the 60-hectare Lake Gardens (Perdana Botanical Gardens), established in 1888. KL Bird Park itself was established in 1991 and is one of the largest covered bird parks in the world. 

Etiquette

Do:
  • Respect the birds at all times and give them some space. 
  • Listen to staff and follow the park’s safety rules.
  • Be careful in slippery areas around the lakes and waterfall. 
  • Be on time for daily bird shows at 12:30pm and 3:30pm as arriving late may be disruptive. 
Don't:
  • Litter in the bird park.
  • Feed the birds unless supervised by staff.
  • Disturb the birds by touching them, throwing objects at them, or shouting at them.
