These natural saltwater hot springs were formed by unique layering of sedimentary rocks deep within the island heated by geothermal forces. The water and algae in the springs at Ayer Hangat Village contain unique minerals and nutrients known to heal skin conditions like eczema and relieve joint pain. According to local sources, only 3 other saltwater hot springs like this exist in the world.
Visitors can dip their feet in one 3 communal springs, ranging in temperature from cool to 42oC, or hire a private jacuzzi to rejuvenate their whole body. Ayer Hangat Village is the only place in Langkawi to experience Malay massage, where expert therapists skillfully kneed at pressure points to energize and relax both muscles and skin.
The springs are centered around a traditional-style village house, where cultural performances like wedding ceremonies, dances, and music can be watched and traditional food like sweet cakes called "kueh" are offered.

Backstory
Ayer Hangat Village was Langkawi's main tourist attraction during the 1990s, at the beginning of the island's tourism boom and before the construction of Langkawi SkyCab.
The aging complex has been in need of a refresh for a number of years, as visitor numbers have declined. Renovations commenced in 2020 aim to bring upgraded spa facilities for Malay massage, and introduce agritourism through the addition of community-run oyster mushroom farms.
The hot springs are naturally created by the presence of geothermal rocks; however, a local legend tells a different story - the hot water was created by 2 feuding families who threw pots, pans, and pitchers of boiling water over each other during a quarrel at a wedding ceremony.
Etiquette
- Make room for other visitors to use public springs.
- Only dip your feet in the public springs.
- Collect water or algae to take home.
- Sit in the hot water too long. Cool down between dips.
Scorecard
- Private semi-outdoor jacuzzi rooms.
- Natural healing properties of water and algae.
- Option to try Malay massage. No other Malay massage offerings in Langkawi.
- Cultural displays like traditional dance, music and snacks.
- Large areas of concrete with very limited shade around public springs.
- Lack of signage explaining health benefits. Algae may seem unclean to those who don't know about its healing properties.
