7 Pieces of Gear for Your Next Big Adventure Trip

Guest article by Today

Got a big trip coming up? It's an exciting time.

You'll be out exploring the wilderness, a state you've never seen, or maybe even a country on your bucket list. While the thought of a new adventure can bring you joyful anticipation, it can also mean thinking about what to pack.

You can't take everything with you, so you have to narrow it down to the essentials. What gear you'll need will depend on your itinerary, but some items come in handy no matter where you're headed. Whether you leave tomorrow or next month, here are seven pieces of gear to consider packing in your bags.

1. Portable Lights

You never know when you'll get caught in the dark. Granted, your chances are higher if you're about to embark on a camping trip versus an international cruise. But it doesn't hurt to throw in some mini flashlights or headlamps for the crew.

You'll be prepared for breakdowns on the road, power outages, and late-night campfires. Portable lights don't take up much space. Some even clip to the side of a backpack or fit securely in a side pocket. Just be sure to take extra batteries or a power bank for recharging with you.

2. First-Aid Kits

If you're headed into the great outdoors, you could have your sights set on hiking trails and fishing spots. While an encounter with a grizzly bear or a snake probably isn't on your to-do list, neither are injuries like broken bones. Nonetheless, bruises, burns, and sprains are some of the more common injuries outdoor enthusiasts sustain.

Being prepared to address them with a first-aid kit is critical. It can mean the difference between an injury healing properly or turning into something more serious, like an infection. You can buy pre-assembled travel-size first-aid kits with all the essentials. Or you can put together your own with supplies such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, burn gel, and ice packs. Hopefully, you don't have to use these supplies, but if you do, you'll be thankful you brought them along.

3. Water Filter Bottle

You never know what the water quality will be like once you get to your destination. For those with sensitive systems, even a slight shift in water quality and local treatment techniques can lead to unpleasant symptoms. In remote areas, filtering or boiling the water could be a must.

A water filter bottle solves those potential problems. Best of all, it's small enough to fit in a travel bag. You'll have access to clean, drinkable water no matter where you are.

4. Rain Jacket

You'll need something to keep you warm. Temperatures can fluctuate, particularly in outdoor areas. If you're headed to a location with mountains, be prepared to dress in layers. It may be below freezing at night and then warm up to spring-like temperatures by the afternoon.

It's also a good idea to be prepared for exposure to rain or snow. Rain jackets and water-resistant jackets with fleece interiors will keep you warm plus moisture-free. If you prefer to use a rain poncho instead, be prepared with warm clothing to layer underneath. Items like long underwear, sweatshirts, and long-sleeved fleece shirts can help you be ready.

5. Multi-Tool

A multi-tool is more than a pocketknife. It's a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, scissors, and a knife in one compact device. A multi-tool can help you address everything from minor repairs to emergencies while you're on the road.

When you can't take your entire toolkit with you, a multi-tool is the next best thing. If you're traveling by air, you'll need to stash the tool away in your checked luggage. But if you're traveling any other way, keep it in a safe compartment within your backpack. Although you may not need every tool the device has, you'll know you're ready to tackle any inconvenience.

6. Proper Footwear

No matter where you go, you're probably going to be doing a lot of walking. Whether you're out on the trails or pounding the pavement, you need the right shoes. Obviously, you're going to want something with traction if you're hiking. Be sure to include trail shoes, hiking boots, or sneakers with good traction on your packing list.

Comfortable sneakers are versatile enough to handle a variety of surfaces. However, you may want to throw sturdy sandals on if you're near the beach. Walking on sand can be trickier and more strenuous than it looks. You could also run into sharp objects and need to protect your skin from the heat. If packing space is a concern, opt for a pair of shoes that will protect your feet and are functional enough to work in any environment.

7. Handheld Tech

Your smartphone can do a lot of things. It can snap photos, show you where you are on the map, and be a lifeline in an emergency. But if you're in a remote area without cell service, your smartphone will turn into a fancy paperweight. Including a handheld GPS device and a personal locator beacon can work in case you lose your way in secluded areas.

You may even consider including a compass that doesn't rely on modern networks, just in case. A paper map of your destination wouldn't hurt either. You never know when a battery will inconveniently run out or when communication networks will go offline. Handheld tech devices and old-fashioned backups may turn out to be lifesavers.

Gearing Up

Getting ready for your next big trip is only half the fun. But it's full of important steps, including what you should pack. By including essential gear, you'll be ready for whatever adventures await.
