Start the day with a hearty breakfast and a close encounter with Bali Zoo's orangutans and elephants. Help yourself to the breakfast buffet but pay close attention while you're up, as some friendly animals may be brought out to join the feast.
First up are a pair of hungry elephants. Guests can pose beside for a photo or purchase a basket of fruit to feed. Next are the stars of the show, 2 orangutans who swing down to their platforms on a series of ropes and vines.
Photographs with the orangutans are also allowed, but don't get too close in case they grab hold of your hair - they won't let go!
Two other friendly animals are briefly brought out to say hello to diners, a porcupine and a pangolin (or armadillo). To close, an elephant keeper runs a short presentation, showcasing an elephant's ability to sit, crush a coconut, and place a floral wreath over helpful volunteers.
Bali Zoo houses 5 orangutans and 13 elephants. The zoo curator carefully selects the animals that best interact with humans for the Breakfast with Orangutans program.

Insider Tips For Breakfast with Orangutans at Bali Zoo
- During peak season, this experience fills up nearly a month in advance. So it's best to book your tickets as far in advance as possible or be flexible with your dates if leaving it to the last minute.
- Tickets can be purchased directly from the zoo's website or GetYourGuide, Klook, Voyagin, and Viator.
- Arrive spot-on 8am to secure a good table near the animals and make a head start on breakfast. Most guests arrive closer to 8:30am.
- Inform the zoo of any dietary requirements at the time of booking so chefs can prepare a special meal for you (such as vegetarian/vegan).
- A basket of fruit and vegetables to feed elephants costs Rp60,000 (USD$3.79).
- Don't take belongings like sunglasses, watches, or mobile phones near the orangutans in case they grab them. We saw one orangutan grab and snap a man's sunglasses in the split second he wasn't looking.
- All Breakfast with Orangutans tickets include entry to the zoo.
- Tickets are available either with or without return hotel transfers. If you choose tickets with hotel transfers, remember the number of your vehicle so the 'transfers desk' can call your driver when you're ready to leave.
- To squeeze more fun into your day, purchase a Breakfast with Orangutans and Elephant Mud Fun package. After breakfast, spend time feeding and bathing elephants before enjoying a buffet lunch.
- Photographs taken by the zoo's photographers can be purchased from the Photo Booth in the zoo area.

Be mindful of the harsh morning light filtering through trees casting shadows over the elephants. Enjoy your breakfast first, then take photos when the sun rises a little higher. Look out for bright lighting in the background that can cause a loss of detail or unwanted silhouettes – just be patient for the orangutan to move around their platform for the perfect lighting.
