Rebak Island Resort & Marina Langkawi: Review

If Langkawi is the ultimate tropical paradise, then Rebak Island is the beach getaway of your dreams. The 390-acre private island is a 7-minute boat ride from Langkawi's Port Cenang and home to only a marina and 5-star resort.

A stay at this resort is the definition of luxury. You'll eat like a king or queen with in-house chefs specializing in Indian, Malay, and Thai cuisines, then relax your full belly by the pool or on the private beach.

If you think relaxing is the only thing to do on a private island, think again. The resort houses tennis, squash, and badminton courts, beach volleyball, and bicycle and kayak hire. Guided activities include cooking classes, fishing excursions, and nature walks to look for local monkeys, hornbills or monitor lizards basking in the mangrove forest.

The resort is split into 2 wings, the first containing traditionally-inspired wooden chalets while the second has more modern concrete chalets, still fitted with Malay-style wooden furniture. Guests in both wings wake up meters away from waves gently lapping at the shore. It doesn't get any better than this.

What's Nearby

Pantai Cenang (Chenang Beach)

Langkawi’s most tourist-friendly beach. This 2km stretch of soft white sand is lined with coconut trees, beach umbrellas, jet ski vendors, and beach bars. By day, sunbathers, swimmers, and watersport enthusiasts dominate the sparkling shoreline. As the sun softly sets, a series of beach bars become the center of attention as beanbags and cocktail menus are brought onto the sand.

Insider Tips For Rebak Island Resort & Marina Langkawi

  • Boats from Port Cenang to Rebak Island run 7 times per day. The first boat leaves at 7:30am from Rebak or 8:15am from Cenang. The last boat leaves at 7:30pm from Rebak or 7:45pm from Cenang. Additional times are available for a charge. Complementary special boats are provided for guests with late airport arrival.

  • Complimentary buggy service is included from the marina to the hotel, and are also available around the hotel upon request.
  • Rooms fitted with DVD plays include complimentary DVD hire from the lobby.
  • No durian or mangosteen (local fruit) are to be brought to the island due to the strong smell.
  • Monkeys must not be fed as they will become aggressive and steal.
  • Swimming and kayaking is only permitted in the sectioned of area by the beach to protect swimmers from boats. Jellyfish have not been sighted at Rebak Island.
  • Staff recommend guests do not walk the nature trail without a guide due to the likelihood of encountering native animals or getting lost.
  • Cooking classes cost RM35 (USD$7.47) per person and are run at 12:30pm every Thursday and Sunday. Classes include 2 dishes, take-home recipes, and handy tips from the resort's expert chefs. Meals are then enjoyed for lunch. Additional classes can be arranged upon request.

COVID-19 Response

In response to Malaysia's Relaxed Movement Control Order (RMCO), Rebak Island Resort has implemented several measures to encourage social distancing and comply with governmental SOPs. These include:

  • Emptying of minibars - items are available for purchase and delivery to room upon request.
  • Complimentary sanitization packs in guest rooms containing masks and gloves.
  • Cancelation of some activities like live music nights and guided nature walks. Other activities like cooking classes are demonstration only. Guests may watch the chef and ask questions but not participate or get too close.
  • Hand sanitizing stations placed throughout the complex.
  • Mandatory wearing of masks in common areas.
  • Closure of all restaurants/bars except Senari. Drinks and cocktails can be served in the restaurant.

Best Parts:
  • Private island & beach. Only the marina and hotel are located on Rebak Island. Private swimming beach is located opposite the pool area.
  • World class food. Chefs prepare dishes from a range of cuisines to an exceptionally high standard. Dietary requirements and special requests can be accommodated.
  • Natural habitat of largely untouched island includes a range of exotic plants and birds like hornbills and kingfishers. Guided nature walks are available.
  • Availability of activities like tennis, beach volleyball, kayaking, and fishing tours. Guides show guests secret fishing spots and their catch can be cooked to their liking by the restaurant.
  • High standard of service. Staff are friendly, professional, welcoming, and assist with any request the best they can. No request is too big or small.
Could Be Better:
  • Location below flight path means regular loud noise from planes landing in Langkawi Airport. No planes during the night.
  • Choppy waters make for a fairly rocky boat ride during the wet season months.
  • Funny sayings on toiletries are a little odd.
  • Renovations due for tennis and squash courts.
